braided steel cable torque “tubes”

Take a driveshaft (or half shafts, I guess), and replace it with braided steel cable. That way you get a low-k torsional spring in your torque path, and you can even individually tune forward vs reverse characteristics. Could you tune it in such a way that you don’t need differentials? Doubt it. Good enough to eliminate dual-mass flywheels? probably not. Maybe a cool idea in a drag car, so you can spring load your launch, but they’re generally already traction-limited at that point…

Just think of all the undesirable bullshit you’d also need to design around: wind ’em up too much, now your wheels are getting pulled in towards your differential. Snap a cable and now you have an unbalanced nightmare trying flailing around trying to saw your car to bits.

Don’t do this.
